The Wonder Bread Years
starring Pat Hazell

Saturday, June 18, 2011
8pm

A salute to the Baby Boomer Generation, The Wonder Bread Years, written by and starring Seinfeld writer Pat Hazell, invites you to take a rollicking field trip back to your childhood atThe Grand 1894 Opera House on Saturday, June 18th at 8 pm. The Wonder Bread Years is a fast-paced, hilarious production that gracefully walks the line between stand-up and theater.  “Laugh-out-loud material that is pitch-perfect,”  notes Impact Weekly.

Life was all about Kool-Aid, sugar pops, jiffy pop, twinkies, slinkies, twister and getting in trouble! The Wonder Bread Years features a set that will evoke the typical front porch and yard of an American kid in the 1960s and 70s. The show looks back on the food, toys, holiday customs, commercials, and TV shows of an amazing era. Manwich, Spam, the kid’s table, Rock’em Sock’em Robots, milk money, Dilly Bars, road trips in the way-back seat of the family station wagon—these are just a few of the slices of Americana that will be served up!

The Wonder Bread Years is written and performed by Pat Hazell who Showtime portrays as “one of the funniest people in America.”  A veteran of The Tonight Show,  a critically-acclaimed playwright, and a contributing commentator to National Public Radio,  Hazell is recognized for his genuinely funny American humor and his salute to pop culture.

“Pure unpasteurized nostalgia”, according to The Los Angeles Times, while The Dallas Morning News states “Mr. Hazell's nostalgia is contagious.”  Audiences certainly won’t want to miss experiencing this slice of Americana that Jerry Seinfeld calls “milk-snorting funny”!

An acoustic evening with
Lyle Lovett & John Hiatt

Monday, June 27, 2011
8pm

Touring together often since 1989, Lovett and Hiatt - each with more than a dozen albums to their credit - swap stories and songs, setting aside respective bands for the opportunity of delivering one of the most compelling “unplugged” concerts on the road – all with the sounds of finely crafted country, swing, folk, R&B and rock 'n' roll.

A native Texan and graduate of Texas A&M University, Lyle Lovett began his music career as a songwriter, but soon signed with MCA Records (1986) and debuted with a self-titled album.  Even though typically associated with the country genre, the music of Lyle Lovett is broader in scope as his albums incorporate folk, swing, blues, jazz, and gospel music – in addition to the more traditional country. Indeed, Lovett was one of the most distinctive and original singer/songwriters to emerge during the '80s. Recorded with his Large Band, Lovett’s latest album, Natural Forces (Curb/Lost Highway), combines original songs with those by fellow Texas songwriters he admires.   Critics have said “There’s not a style of music this man cannot do well. Artists as talented and diverse as Lyle Lovett are few and far between, and he's proven that with each and every release; Mr. Lovett’s talents are immeasurable.” His Grammy Awards include Best Country Album, Best Country Duo/Group with Vocal, Best Pop Vocal Collaboration, and Best Country Male Vocal.   In addition to these awards, this internationally- recognized singer/songwriter has won accolades on both the big screen and television.

Known for his extraordinary songwriting talent, John Hiatt was inducted into the Nashville Songwriter’s Hall of Fame in 2008 and also was honored that year with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Songwriting from The American Music Association.  Named “…one of rock’s most astute singer-songwriters of the last 40 years,” by the Los Angeles Times, Hiatt has 19 studio albums to date including his latest The Open Road.  Nominated for eleven Grammys, he has written songs for such famous and talented artists as Bob Dylan, Rosanne Cash, Willie Nelson, Jewel, and Bonnie Raitt. Hiatt’s solo career began in 1974 with  Hangin’ Around the Observatory.   He draws from country, blues, and folk, as well as new wave pop which lead to his latest release.

This concert – “to be filled with camaraderie, heart-warming displays of mutual respect, formidable musicianship, and the highest level of song craft,"  is certain to “be a two-hour-plus performance that will be both rocking and soulful; touching and hilarious.” The audience is sure to be in for an unforgettable evening of grand entertainment when these two songwriters, singers, and good friends take center stage at Galveston’s Grand 1894 Opera House.
