Left Singing
Written ByJohn Bostock, PhD

As I have now discovered that there is a law suit filed against the city on the smoking ban issue, I will leave that subject alone (hooray! I hear you shout). All I will say on the subject now is that, as I believe in freedom, I will be voting for candidates that wish to overturn the ban in the upcoming elections and hope that Danny Weber becomes mayor (he was one of only two that voted against it).

A little history here. During World War 2, the King of the U.K. was George VI, well before he became King on the abdication of his brother King Edward VIII, he had a bad stutter. As a young boy, he was sent for singing lessons because they considered that it might help his stutter. Well, it did, as King he had lost his stutter and spoke well. They really didn’t know why it worked, but they just knew it did.

Now, fast forward to the present time. Research has discovered that speech is developed in the left side of the brain where all the connections are made for the formation of words, sentences, etc. but music (including singing) is developed in the right side of the brain. Studies of stroke victims that have had their speech affected have shown that singing can vastly improve their re-development of speech and that activity is taken over by the right side of the brain – speaking as if they are singing (a bit like rap I suppose, no perhaps not).

We all know that the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and vice-versa, so why are all left handed people not good singers? Well it is known that left handed people are, proportionally more artistic in some way than right handed people, (yes I’m biased, I’m left handed) for instance, public speaking is an art and did you notice during the election that both John McCain and President Obama are both left handed? And (whatever you might think of them as politicians) both are really good speakers, I also understand that they can both sing.

So I did a little research (well 30 seconds on google), and found that there have been 9 known left handed presidents. Grant, Garfield, Hoover, Truman, Ford, Reagan, Bush, Clinton, Obama. There are more that were suspected of being left handed, but of course as we know, many years ago it was considered “evil” to be left handed so “lefities” were made to use their right hands. Queen Victoria, Henry Ford, were also left handed as is Prince Charles, Prince William, etc, etc. Many of the world leaders were and are left handed as are many of the great composers, song writers, musicians and actors.

So why am I telling you this? Well it seems that only up to 15% of people are left handed but they make up a much larger percentage of politicians, entertainers, world leaders, mathematicians, scientists, etc. showing how important the right side of the brain is for assimilating information and communicating that information to others.

So come on all you left handers, be proud of it, you are in great company and remember, we are the ones in our “right” minds!
